The Jade Museum holds the largest collection of pre-Columbian jade in the world, and jade in Costa Rica has a distinct story: the material is not found locally in usable quantity, so it was traded in from Guatemala and beyond, worked into pendants and ceremonial axe-gods, and buried with the dead as the highest-status material available. Around 500 AD it was largely displaced by gold, which arrived from the south.
The building is a striking angular block near the Plaza de la Democracia, and the display is arranged thematically across five floors, using backlighting to show the translucency of the stone — jade only reads properly when light passes through it, and the museum is designed around that.
Beyond jade, the collection covers ceramics, stone sculpture, and the metates or grinding stones that are among the finest Costa Rican pre-Columbian objects, alongside material on daily life, shamanism and burial practice.
