The Sixth Floor Museum occupies the actual room. On 22 November 1963, shots were fired at President Kennedy's motorcade from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, and the museum is on that floor, with the corner window from which they were fired preserved behind glass, the book cartons stacked as they were found.

The exhibition covers Kennedy's presidency, the Dallas visit, the assassination, the investigations — the Warren Commission and the House Select Committee, whose conclusions differed — and the enduring conspiracy theories, which it treats seriously as a cultural phenomenon without endorsing them. Films, photographs, the Zapruder footage and contemporary broadcast material carry it.

Looking down at Elm Street and the grassy knoll from that window is the part visitors do not forget, and it clarifies the geography that no amount of documentary footage does.
