Ju Ming Museum

The Ju Ming Museum in Jinshan District, New Taipei City, Taiwan, showcases the works of renowned Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming. Established in 1999, it features over 3,000 sculptures in a vast outdoor setting, making it Taiwan’s largest outdoor art museum.

Ju Ming was a woodcarver's apprentice who became Taiwan's best-known sculptor, and the museum he built at Jinshan is the largest outdoor art museum in the country — some eleven hectares of hillside holding over 3,000 works, most of them his own.

The Taichi series is what he is known for: massive figures in bronze and stone, derived from tai chi postures, reduced to blunt planes and mass. Standing among dozens of them scattered across open lawns, with the mountains behind and the sea beyond, is a completely different experience from encountering one in a gallery — the scale and the landscape are the medium. The Living World series covers modern subjects in bronze, steel and other materials: soldiers, swimmers, people with umbrellas, parachutists suspended overhead.

He built the museum himself over a decade, and it opened in 1999.
