The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1994 as part of the city's shift from heavy industry and port work toward culture, and it sits in a large sculpture park in Gushan district — a setting that gives it room for outdoor work and makes the surrounding grounds an attraction in themselves.

The collection focuses on Taiwanese art, with particular strength in southern Taiwanese artists and in work engaging with the island's identity — a subject that carries real weight given Taiwan's contested political status and its layered history of Indigenous, Chinese, Japanese and postwar influences.
