Keyuan Museum

Keyuan Museum, also known as Ke Garden, is a classical Lingnan-style garden in Dongguan, Guangdong, built in the Qing Dynasty. It is one of the Four Great Gardens of Guangdong and a birthplace of the Lingnan School of Painting.

Keyuan is one of the four great classical gardens of Guangdong, built in the mid-nineteenth century by a Qing official, and it demonstrates a distinctly Lingnan approach to garden design — more compact and vertical than the famous Suzhou gardens, adapted to the subtropical climate with covered walkways, high walls for shade, and buildings that open to catch the breeze.

The garden packs pavilions, a study, a lookout tower, ponds, rockeries and bridges into roughly a fifth of a hectare, using layered sightlines so the space reads as considerably larger than it is. Grey brick, carved wood and ceramic ornament are the local materials.

Its art-historical significance is real: Keyuan was a gathering place for painters and is regarded as a birthplace of the Lingnan School, the early twentieth-century movement that combined Chinese ink technique with Western realism and Japanese influence, and which shaped modern Chinese painting.
