Dalmatia has grown olives since Greek and Roman settlement, and the Olive Museum at Klis sets out that history alongside the practical business of oil production. Opened in 2018, it covers cultivation, the indigenous Dalmatian varieties, harvesting and pressing methods from ancient stone mills to modern extraction, and the place of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet.

A botanical garden grows olive varieties and companion Mediterranean plants, and tastings with traditional Dalmatian food are part of the offering.

The setting is the draw. Klis is a fortress town on a mountain pass above Split, and the fortress itself — a strategic stronghold contested by Romans, Croatian kings, Ottomans, Venetians and Habsburgs, and used as Meereen in Game of Thrones — dominates the ridge. The views over Split and the islands are among the best in Dalmatia.
