Kutch Museum is the oldest in Gujarat, founded in 1877 by the Maharao of Kutch, and its collection reflects a region that is culturally distinct from the rest of India — a borderland of salt desert facing Pakistan, historically connected by sea to Arabia and Africa, with its own language and a remarkable density of craft traditions.

The textile collection is the reason to come. Kutch embroidery encompasses a dozen or more distinct styles practised by different communities — Rabari, Ahir, Jat, Mutwa — each with its own stitches, mirrors and motifs, and the museum holds historical examples alongside bandhani tie-dye, ajrakh block printing and weaving.

Other collections cover archaeology including Indus Valley material, the extinct Kutchi script, coins, arms, and tribal ethnography.

Bhuj was heavily damaged in the 2001 earthquake, and the museum and neighbouring palaces have undergone long restoration. Bookable options combine it with the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal palaces in a half-day tour. Current availability is listed below.
