The Kyushu Railway History Museum occupies the original 1891 red-brick headquarters of the Kyushu Railway Company in Mojiko, and the building is a designated cultural property in its own right — Meiji-era Western-style architecture from the period when Japan was rapidly industrialising and importing European engineering.

The collection covers Kyushu's railway history: restored passenger coaches from successive eras that visitors can enter, including wooden-bodied stock, steam and electric locomotives, and the operating equipment of the network. Driving simulators use real cab controls, and the miniature railway park lets children drive scaled trains around a circuit, which is the part they remember.

Mojiko Retro, the surrounding district, is the wider attraction: a preserved port quarter of Meiji and Taisho-era buildings from when Moji was one of Japan's principal international harbours, facing Shimonoseki across the strait.
