The Lakeland Motor Museum holds over 30,000 exhibits at Backbarrow in the southern Lake District — classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, tractors and a very large quantity of automobilia: petrol pumps, enamel signs, garage equipment, toys, and the accumulated material culture of British motoring.
The separate Campbell Bluebird exhibition is the reason many people come. Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald between them held both land and water speed records, and Donald was killed on Coniston Water in 1967 attempting to exceed 300 mph when Bluebird K7 somersaulted at speed. The exhibition holds full-size replicas of Bluebird K7 and the Bluebird CN7 land speed car, alongside material on the record attempts. Coniston is a few miles away, and Donald Campbell is buried there.
The museum sits on the River Leven in a former mill building, near the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway.
