Lychnostatis was built by one man over decades. A Cretan doctor assembled it near Hersonissos from 1986, reconstructing the rural Crete of his childhood before tourism transformed the north coast: a traditional stone dwelling with its furnishings, a windmill, a stone-built threshing floor, an olive press, a wine press, a raki still, ceramic and weaving workshops, and gardens planted with the herbs and Cretan flora used in daily life.

The pre-industrial technology is demonstrated rather than displayed — how olives were pressed, how grain was threshed and winnowed, how raki was distilled after the grape harvest.

Its position is pointed: it sits in the middle of the Hersonissos resort strip, which is exactly the development it documents the disappearance of.

Tastings of Cretan produce, herbs, raki and cactus fruit are included in most visits, and the gardens are pleasant.
