Picasso was born in Málaga in 1881 and left as a child, and for most of the twentieth century the city had little to show for it. The museum, opened in 2003 in the sixteenth-century Buenavista Palace, was created substantially through donations from his daughter-in-law Christine and grandson Bernard, and it holds over 200 works spanning eight decades.
The collection is not a greatest-hits selection — the famous paintings are elsewhere — and that is its strength. It shows the range and the working process: early academic studies, cubist experiments, ceramics from the Vallauris years, sculpture, engravings and late paintings, with the depth to show how he moved between media and returned to problems repeatedly.
The palace itself is worth attention, and excavation during conversion uncovered Phoenician and Roman remains in the basement, now displayed.
