The Maduro family have been in Curaçao since the seventeenth century, part of the Sephardic Jewish community that fled Iberian persecution via Amsterdam and Brazil and made the island a major trading centre — Willemstad's Mikvé Israel-Emanuel is the oldest continuously used synagogue in the Americas.
The Mongui Maduro Museum occupies a restored country house, or landhuis, holding the family's antique furniture, heirlooms and portraits alongside two substantial collections: Judaica documenting Caribbean Jewish life, and Antilliana — books, maps, documents and artefacts covering the history of the Netherlands Antilles, which functions as a research library.
The landhuis building type is itself part of Curaçao's heritage, plantation houses in ochre and pastel that dot the island.
