The Ecomuseum Zoo is the only outdoor zoo on Montreal Island, dedicated exclusively to Quebec’s wildlife, offering visitors encounters with native species in naturalistic habitats.

The Ecomuseum is the only outdoor zoo on Montreal Island, and its distinguishing principle is that it keeps only species native to Québec — no elephants, no big cats from elsewhere, but wolves, black bears, lynx, cougar, caribou, porcupines, otters, raptors and reptiles of the region.

That focus makes it a conservation and education institution rather than a general zoo. Most animals are non-releasable rescues — injured, orphaned or habituated to humans — and the museum is explicit about their histories, which gives the visit an ethical framing many zoos avoid.

The naturalistic enclosures sit in woodland at the western tip of the island in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, and winter visits are genuinely rewarding since the animals are cold-adapted and considerably more active than in summer heat.
