The main building shut in 2019 for a renovation expected to run for years, which makes checking its status essential before planning a visit.
What opened instead is the Depot, and it is a genuinely novel idea. Rather than storing the collection out of sight during the closure, the museum built a mirrored bowl-shaped building next door that houses the entire holding and admits the public into the storage itself. Visitors walk among racked paintings, crated sculpture, climate-controlled rooms and conservation studios, seeing how a collection is actually kept rather than curated.
The rooftop has a restaurant and birch forest with views over Rotterdam.
