The Museum of Illusions in Monastiraki holds over 50 exhibits built on perceptual trickery — holograms, stereograms, anti-gravity and tilted rooms, an infinity chamber, a vortex tunnel, and installations that photograph as impossible.

Each exhibit carries an explanation of the underlying visual or physical principle, which gives the visit some educational substance alongside the photographs, and the smart playroom of puzzles and dilemma games extends it.

It works particularly well with children and teenagers and functions as a reliable alternative when Athens is either too hot to walk the archaeological sites or, less often, too wet.

Monastiraki puts it in the middle of everything — the flea market, the Ancient Agora and the Acropolis approach are all within minutes.
