The Museum of Ryde occupies the Royal Victoria Arcade, an 1836 shopping arcade built when Ryde was developing as a fashionable seaside resort — the Isle of Wight having become respectable after Queen Victoria bought Osborne House along the coast.
Local history covers 250 years of the town: the pier, one of the oldest in Britain, the Victorian villas, the shipping and the wartime years.
The Donald McGill collection is the unexpected element. McGill drew saucy seaside postcards for decades — the double-entendre humour of fat men, thin wives and vicars that defined British holiday culture — and was prosecuted for obscenity in 1954 at the age of 79. George Orwell wrote a serious essay defending the form as authentic working-class comedy. The museum holds a substantial body of his work.
