The National Motorcycle Museum holds over 1,000 British motorcycles, and the collection documents an industry that dominated the world market and then collapsed almost entirely — BSA, Triumph, Norton, Velocette, Ariel, Vincent, Brough Superior and dozens of smaller marques, most gone by the end of the 1970s under Japanese competition.
The machines are restored to exhibition standard and arranged broadly chronologically across five halls, covering road bikes, racing machines, record breakers and prototypes.
The museum's own history includes a serious setback: a fire in 2003 destroyed a large part of the collection, and the rebuilding and restoration effort that followed is itself part of the story.
It sits near Birmingham airport and the NEC, in the West Midlands, which was the heart of British motorcycle manufacture.
