The New Orleans African American Museum sits in Tremé, generally reckoned the oldest African American neighbourhood in the United States — a district where free people of colour owned property before the Civil War, where Congo Square hosted the drumming and dancing that fed directly into jazz, and which was cut in half by an interstate highway in the 1960s.
The museum occupies a Creole villa complex of the 1820s with a campus of historic buildings and gardens, and its collections cover African American art, history and culture in the city and the wider diaspora.
Music, community and the specific character of New Orleans Black culture — Mardi Gras Indians, social aid and pleasure clubs, second lines — run through the programming.
The museum reopened after extensive Hurricane Katrina damage and subsequent restoration.
