Het Noordbrabants Museum sits in 's-Hertogenbosch, and its regional focus produces an unusual strength: North Brabant is where Vincent van Gogh was born and where he made his early work, before Paris and Arles. The museum holds paintings and drawings from that Dutch period — dark, heavy, peasant subjects, quite different from the work most people picture.

The Brabant collection covers the province's art from the medieval period onward, including Jan Sluijters and the twentieth century, alongside history collections and contemporary work.

The museum is joined to the Design Museum Den Bosch next door, and combined visits are usual.

Den Bosch itself is worth the trip: a fortified medieval city with an extraordinary Gothic cathedral, canals running beneath the streets that can be toured by boat, and the birthplace of Hieronymus Bosch, whose work is commemorated in the city though none of his paintings remain here.
