The USS Bowfin is a Balao-class submarine launched on 7 December 1942, exactly a year after Pearl Harbor, which earned her the nickname the Pearl Harbor Avenger. She made nine war patrols in the Pacific and is preserved afloat at Pearl Harbor.
Going through her is the substance of the visit: the torpedo rooms, the control room, the engine spaces and the crew quarters, in a hull where 80 men lived for months in conditions of extreme confinement and considerable danger. Submarine losses in the Pacific war were proportionally the highest of any American service arm.
The museum ashore covers submarine development from early designs through the Second World War to the nuclear era, with torpedoes, equipment and personal accounts.
The Waterfront Memorial lists the 52 American submarines lost with their crews.
