Palazzo Falson is among the oldest buildings in Mdina, with parts dating to the thirteenth century, and it survives as a house rather than a restored shell — its last owner, Olof Gollcher, was a collector who lived there until 1962 and left everything in place.

The collection reflects one man's wide and slightly obsessive interests: paintings, silver, arms and armour, oriental rugs, coins, jewellery, furniture and a library of some 4,500 volumes, including incunabula. The quality is high and the arrangement is domestic rather than curatorial.

The building itself, with its courtyard, stone staircase and rooftop terrace looking across Malta, is as much the point as the contents.

Mdina, the silent walled city, is at its best in the evening when the day visitors have gone.
