Penang is generally reckoned to have the best street food in Malaysia, and the Wonderfood Museum is built entirely around that — over 100 hyper-realistic replicas of Malaysian dishes, some scaled up to enormous size, in a restored 1940s shophouse.
The oversized replicas are the photo draw: a giant bowl of laksa, an outsized nasi lemak. But the museum has real content behind them, explaining the dishes, their origins in the Chinese, Malay and Indian communities that make up Penang, and the Nyonya cuisine that emerged from their intermarriage.
There is also a serious section on food waste and hygiene, which is more thoughtful than the format promises.
The practical value is orientation: George Town's hawker scene is bewildering to a first-time visitor, and knowing what the dishes are before ordering improves the eating considerably.
