Peniche fortress was Portugal's principal political prison under the Estado Novo dictatorship, holding opponents of the regime — communists, republicans, trade unionists — for decades, in a sixteenth-century sea fortress on a headland where escape was near impossible. One famous escape did succeed, in 1960, when ten prisoners including Álvaro Cunhal got out.
The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom opened there in 2024, and the choice to make the prison itself the museum is deliberate: the cells, the isolation punishment cells known as segredos, and the interrogation rooms are the exhibition.
The material covers the dictatorship from 1926, the PIDE secret police, censorship, the colonial wars, the resistance and the Carnation Revolution of 1974 that ended it — a bloodless coup, with soldiers carrying flowers in their gun barrels.
