Nguyễn Huệ, who took the title Quang Trung, led the Tây Sơn uprising that overthrew Vietnam's ruling houses in the 1770s and 80s, and then in 1789 defeated a Qing Chinese invasion at Ngọc Hồi–Đống Đa in a campaign conducted over the Tet holiday, when the Chinese assumed no fighting would occur. He died at 39, and the dynasty collapsed shortly after.

The museum stands on his birthplace in Bình Định province and covers the uprising, the campaigns and the Tây Sơn period, with weapons, documents and dioramas.

The martial arts performances are the distinctive element: Bình Định is the heartland of Vietnamese traditional martial arts, and demonstrations at the museum include the war drum sets played as a martial discipline in their own right.
