Sacromonte is the hillside opposite the Alhambra where Roma communities settled from the sixteenth century, digging homes into the soft rock — whitewashed cave dwellings that stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

The museum recreates those interiors: a family home, a stable, a blacksmith's, a weaver's and a basketmaker's cave, furnished as they were used, showing a way of living that persisted into the twentieth century until floods in 1963 forced many families out.

Flamenco's zambra sacromontana developed here, and the museum covers its origins in the fusion of Roma, Andalusian and Moorish traditions — a claim about flamenco's roots that is contested in detail but broadly accepted.

The site includes a natural interpretation area covering the surrounding landscape, and the views back to the Alhambra across the Darro valley are among the best in Granada.
