SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to twentieth-century art, founded in 1935, and Snøhetta's 2016 expansion roughly tripled its gallery space, adding a rippling white facade behind Mario Botta's 1995 building.
The Fisher Collection is the reason the expansion happened: the founders of Gap assembled one of the great private holdings of postwar art — Calder, Kelly, Richter, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Serra and an exceptional group of German painting — placed with the museum on a hundred-year loan.
Photography is a particular strength, with holdings covering the medium's full history, and the museum's design and architecture collection reflects the Bay Area's role in that field.
The living wall on the third-floor sculpture terrace is the largest in the United States.
