Planning your visit
In 1987, at Sipán on Peru's north coast, archaeologists reached an intact Moche tomb before looters did — a rarity, and the richest burial ever excavated in the Americas. The Lord of Sipán was buried around 250 AD in gold, silver, copper and turquoise, with a headdress, ear ornaments, nose plates, a sceptre and hundreds of objects, accompanied by eight other people and two llamas.
The museum at Lambayeque, opened in 2002, was designed as a truncated pyramid echoing Moche architecture, and the visit works downward from the top floor — following the descent into the tomb, with the burial reconstructed at the level it was found.
Moche metalwork is technically extraordinary, including gilding methods only understood recently.
