INS Kurusura was a Soviet-built Foxtrot-class submarine that served the Indian Navy from 1969 to 2001, including operations during the 1971 war with Pakistan. She was hauled ashore at Visakhapatnam in 2002 and opened as a museum — one of relatively few submarines anywhere preserved on land rather than afloat.
Going through her is the point. The interior is preserved as it operated, with the torpedo tubes, the control room, the cramped bunks and the galley, and the confinement is the strongest impression: around 75 men lived in that hull for weeks at a time.
Visakhapatnam is the headquarters of the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command, so the setting is a working naval city.
