Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia, and the demonstrations in his name are the reason to time a visit to Zagreb's technical museum: a guided session in the Tesla cabinet fires a Tesla coil, runs the alternating-current motor that made electrical distribution practical, and works through the experiments, several times daily at fixed hours.
The rest of the museum is a full mid-century technical collection, founded in 1954 — aircraft hung and standing, locomotives, cars, agricultural and industrial machinery, firefighting equipment and a working planetarium.
A reconstructed mine runs beneath the building, entered on a guided tour, showing coal and ore extraction with original equipment.
The presentation is unmodernised, which is part of its character; this is a museum of the era it documents.
