TeddyVille was Malaysia's first teddy bear museum, and its distinguishing idea is local: alongside bears from various eras and countries, the dioramas stage Penang's own history — the colonial port, the Peranakan community, the trades and street life of George Town — with bears in the roles.

That gives it more content than the format usually carries, and it works as a light introduction to Penang's cultural mix for families who would not sit through the equivalent in a history museum.

Batu Ferringhi is the island's beach strip on the north coast, about half an hour from George Town, and the museum is one of the indoor options there when the afternoon heat or rain makes the beach unattractive.

George Town's UNESCO-listed centre, with its shophouses and street art, is the substantial cultural visit on Penang.
