Museu Terra grew out of a wine cooperative building — L'Espluga de Francolí's is one of the modernista "cathedrals of wine" designed by Cèsar Martinell, a student of Gaudí, and the parabolic brick vaults are worth the visit independently of the exhibits.
The museum documents rural Catalan life: the agricultural year, the crafts and trades of a village economy, the tools and the domestic interiors. Its recent reframing pushes the subject forward into sustainability, land use and climate change, which gives the ethnographic material an argument rather than leaving it as nostalgia.
An ethnobotanical garden grows the regional species, and the programme includes workshops and events.
The village sits in the Conca de Barberà wine region, close to the Cistercian monastery of Poblet, a UNESCO site and the burial place of the kings of Aragon.
