The Mob Museum occupies the 1933 federal courthouse in downtown Las Vegas where one of the Kefauver Committee hearings was held in 1950 — the televised Senate investigation that put organised crime in front of the American public for the first time — and the restored courtroom is part of the visit.
The exhibitions run both sides: the rise of the Mafia, Prohibition and the bootlegging that funded it, the families and the killings, and the law enforcement response through wiretaps, RICO and the informants who broke the code.
The wall from the St Valentine's Day Massacre is displayed, bullet holes intact.
A working speakeasy in the basement, entered by password, serves Prohibition-era cocktails, and a distillery operates alongside it.
Las Vegas was built with mob money, and the museum treats the city's own history directly rather than as background.
