Planning your visit
The Toy Museum of Catalonia has held over 4,000 objects since 1982 in a former hotel on Figueres's rambla, covering toys from the nineteenth century to the present — tin, wood, celluloid and plastic, dolls, magic lanterns, mechanical figures, boats and trains.
Its distinguishing holdings are personal. The teddy bear that belonged to Salvador Dalí and his sister Anna Maria is here, along with toys owned by Federico García Lorca, Joan Miró and other Catalan figures, which turns a toy collection into a document of particular childhoods.
Regional traditions are strong: the caganer and pessebre figures, the capgrossos and the games specific to Catalan villages.
Figueres is Dalí's birthplace, and the Teatre-Museu Dalí he designed himself is a few minutes' walk — the reason most visitors are in town.
