Ullen Sentalu is privately founded, opened in 1997 by the Haryono family on the slopes of Merapi at Kaliurang, and it is among the best-presented museums in Indonesia.
Visits are guided only, in small groups, through a sequence of stone-built galleries and garden courtyards that descend and turn so that the route itself is composed. Photography is prohibited inside, which is enforced and which preserves the atmosphere.
The collections concern the Javanese courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta: batik with the patterns reserved to royalty and their meanings, portraits and personal correspondence of princesses, dance and gamelan material, and the aristocratic culture of the Mataram successor states.
The letters written between royal women, displayed and read out by guides, are the emotional centre.
