Museo Choco-Story Uxmal

Cacao was Maya currency and Maya sacrament long before it was European confectionery — beans were counted out as money, and the drink was bitter, spiced with chilli and annatto, and used in ritual.

Choco-Story at Uxmal covers that history across six halls: cultivation, the Maya and Aztec uses, the Spanish transfer to Europe and the sugar that changed it, and modern production. Demonstrations grind and prepare the traditional drink for tasting.

A Maya ceremony honouring Chaac, the rain god, is performed on site, and the grounds include a botanical garden of regional species and enclosures for rescued jaguars, spider monkeys and other wildlife.

Uxmal itself is the reason to be here: the finest Puuc-style architecture in the Maya world, less visited than Chichén Itzá and in many respects more impressive.
