Valentin Banciu was a rally driver who spent decades collecting model trains, and the museum in Hunedoara holds the result — one of the largest such collections in Romania, with locomotives, rolling stock, and operating layouts built at various gauges.

The miniature landscapes are the substance: track running through modelled towns, stations, bridges, tunnels and countryside, with the trains actually operating rather than parked in cases, which is what separates a good model railway museum from a display of boxes.

Romanian railway history runs alongside, and the country's network — built under Habsburg and Ottoman-era influences and then extended under communism — has a distinctive character.

Hunedoara's principal monument is Corvin Castle, one of the great Gothic castles of Europe, a few minutes away and the reason most visitors are in town.
