Lithuania's railways were built by the Russian Empire — the Saint Petersburg–Warsaw line reached Vilnius in 1860 — and the network was subsequently regauged, destroyed and rebuilt through two world wars, the interwar republic, Soviet annexation and independence. The gauge itself remains Russian broad, which is now a strategic issue as the Rail Baltica project builds a European-gauge line north.
The museum, founded in 1966 beside Vilnius station, covers that history with documents, uniforms, signalling and station equipment, and an outdoor stock of locomotives and rolling stock including nineteenth-century steam engines, Soviet diesels and narrow-gauge vehicles.
Wartime deportations moved through these tracks, which the museum records.
The narrow-gauge line at Panevėžys still operates as a heritage railway.
