Volandia occupies the former Caproni works at Malpensa — Gianni Caproni built aircraft here from 1910, and the factory buildings are themselves industrial heritage of the first Italian aviation industry.
Over a hundred aircraft fill the halls and grounds: Caproni's early machines, Second World War fighters, jets, helicopters, and airliners including a Boeing 747 cockpit section and a full Douglas DC-3. Italian aviation's distinctive contributions — the Schneider Trophy racers, Agusta helicopters, the AMX and Eurofighter programmes — are covered.
A space section holds Italian contributions to the ISS modules, and flight simulators run throughout.
The Caproni collection is one of the oldest aviation collections in the world, predating most national museums.
It sits immediately beside Malpensa airport, which makes it a genuine option for a long layover.
