The War Memorial of Korea stands on the former army headquarters site in Yongsan, and its scale is national rather than institutional — vast plazas, a memorial hall listing the dead of the Korean War including the United Nations forces, and galleries covering Korean military history from antiquity.
The Korean War occupies the core. The exhibition runs the invasion of June 1950, the retreat to the Pusan perimeter, Inchon, the Chinese intervention and the stalemate, with the armistice of 1953 that left the peninsula divided and technically still at war.
The outdoor display is the part most visitors remember: aircraft, tanks, artillery and naval vessels, including a B-52 and a destroyer, arranged across the grounds and free to walk among.
