Tibetan medicine is a formal system with its own canon, the Four Tantras, its own pharmacology drawn from high-altitude plants and minerals, and a diagnostic method based on pulse, urine and questioning — and it remains in active clinical use across the Tibetan plateau.
The museum at Xining, the only comprehensive one of its kind, covers the history, the texts, the materia medica with hundreds of specimens, and the surgical and diagnostic instruments.
Its centrepiece is a thangka 618 metres long, painted over 27 years by more than 400 artists from across the Tibetan regions, depicting Tibetan history, medicine, astronomy and religion in a single continuous scroll. It holds a Guinness record and takes a long walk to see.
Qinghai is culturally Amdo, and Kumbum monastery is nearby.
