RAF Elvington was a bomber station, and unusually it was operated by two Free French heavy bomber squadrons from 1944 — the only French units to fly Halifaxes with Bomber Command — which is why the site is also the Allied Air Forces Memorial.
The museum holds over 50 aircraft, and the centrepiece is a Handley Page Halifax reconstructed from original components over many years. Around 6,000 Halifaxes were built and this is one of a handful anywhere.
The Second World War control tower, the operations rooms and the signals buildings survive intact, which is rarer than the aircraft.
Cold War types include a Victor, a Nimrod and a Buccaneer, and several vehicles run on event days.
Yorkshire held more bomber airfields than any other region, and the casualty rates in Bomber Command were the highest of any Allied service.
