The Zuiderzee was an inland sea until 1932, when the Afsluitdijk closed it off and turned it into a freshwater lake — an engineering triumph that destroyed the economy of every fishing town along its shore within a decade.
The Zuiderzee Museum records what was lost. Its outdoor section is a reconstructed village of some 140 buildings moved from towns around the former sea: houses, shops, a church, a smokehouse, lime kilns and boatyards, with craftspeople working the trades — rope-making, sail-making, smoking eel, painting the local pottery.
The indoor museum holds the ship collection, including traditional flat-bottomed Zuiderzee craft, and the costume collection covering the distinct dress of each village.
The outdoor section is seasonal; the indoor one runs year-round.
