Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava on the revitalized waterfront of Rio’s Praça Mauá, the Museu do Amanhã uses interactive exhibits to explore major questions about climate change, biodiversity, and how humans might build a more sustainable future.

Planning your visit

The Museum of Tomorrow does something unusual for a science museum: it asks questions instead of displaying answers, and it has almost no objects at all. Santiago Calatrava's building on Praça Mauá projects out over Guanabara Bay like a skeletal white creature, drawing power from solar panels that track the sun and cooling water from the bay itself — the architecture makes the argument before you enter.

Inside, the route runs through five sections asking where we came from, who we are, where we are going, how we want to live, and what we will do now. It uses large-scale projection, data visualisation and immersive film to cover climate change, biodiversity loss, population and technological change, with the Brazilian and Amazonian dimensions given proper weight. The experience is emotional rather than encyclopaedic, and it divides visitors accordingly.

The museum anchored the regeneration of Rio's derelict port district for the 2016 Olympics, and the Olympic Boulevard outside holds Kobra's vast mural of indigenous faces.

Bookable options include entry tickets and combination formats pairing the museum with the neighbouring AquaRio aquarium, the Yup Star observation wheel, and guided walks along Olympic Boulevard.
