The Archaeological Museum of Olympia is essential rather than optional if you are visiting the sanctuary, because the site's sculpture is here rather than there. The pediments and metopes of the Temple of Zeus — the chariot race of Pelops on one end, the battle of Lapiths and Centaurs on the other, with the Labours of Heracles above the doors — are reassembled in a purpose-built hall, and they are among the finest surviving works of the early Classical period. The Hermes attributed to Praxiteles stands alone in his own room. The Nike of Paionios, and the bronze workshop material of Pheidias including the cup marked with his name, are also here.

The Games themselves are documented through athletic equipment, victory offerings and the mechanics of the competition, which turns the ruins outside from foundations into a functioning festival site.

The practical sequence matters: seeing the site first and the museum second, or the reverse, both work, but doing only one leaves the visit incomplete. The two are a few minutes' walk apart.
