The Black Watch Castle and Museum

The Black Watch was raised in 1739 from independent Highland companies policing the glens after the Jacobite risings — the name comes from their dark tartan and their watch duties. The regiment went on to fight in almost every major British campaign for two and a half centuries, with a reputation and casualty record to match.

The museum occupies Balhousie Castle in Perth, the regimental home, and traces that history through uniforms, weapons, colours, medals — including Victoria Crosses — silver, paintings and personal effects. The First World War material is particularly heavy: Highland regiments suffered disproportionately, and the museum handles that directly.

The regiment lost its independent existence in 2006 when Scottish infantry regiments were amalgamated, which gives the collection an elegiac quality.

The castle grounds and a café make it a comfortable visit, and Perth itself is a pleasant Tayside town.
