Tata Tea Museum

Set among the tea plantations of Munnar, the museum displays antique tea-processing machinery and photographs documenting over a century of tea cultivation in the region, with tastings of estate-grown tea.

Munnar is tea country, and the Tata Tea Museum at Nallathanni explains how it got that way. The high ranges of Kerala were opened to planting from the 1880s by Scottish planters, and the museum documents that history through photographs, documents and the machinery: rollers, driers, sorters and an early tea-processing unit, alongside an original iron furnace and a rail engine wheel from the old monorail that once carried tea down the hills.

The working demonstration is the substance of the visit. A small operating unit shows the process from leaf to finished grade, and the sequence — withering, rolling, oxidation, drying, grading — becomes concrete rather than abstract. Tastings of estate-grown tea follow.

The setting does much of the work regardless: the plantations blanket the hills in clipped green for miles, and the drive up is the reason most people come to Munnar in the first place.
