Achilleion Museum

The Achilleion Museum, located in Gastouri, Corfu, was constructed in the late 19th century by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi. Designed in neoclassical style, the palace is dedicated to the hero Achilles, featuring numerous sculptures and frescoes inspired by Greek mythology. After Empress Elisabeth’s death, the palace was acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who added his own contributions to its art and architecture. Today, the Achilleion serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into royal history and classical art amidst its beautifully landscaped gardens.

The Achilleion was Empress Elisabeth of Austria's escape. Sisi built it on Corfu in the early 1890s, after the suicide of her son Rudolf, as a retreat from a court she despised, and dedicated it to Achilles — a hero she identified with, as someone strong, beautiful and doomed. The neoclassical palace is filled with mythological sculpture and frescoes, including the enormous Dying Achilles in the garden.

After her assassination in 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II bought it and added his own contributions, notably a triumphant Achilles Victorious that replaced her mournful vision with something more martial — the two statues in the same garden make the contrast between the owners unmistakable.

The gardens and terraces overlook the Ionian sea and the Corfu channel, and are the reason many visitors come.

The palace later served as a hospital, a casino, and a location in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.

It sits in Gastouri, about ten kilometres from Corfu Town.
