Planning your visit

The Afsluitdijk is a 32-kilometre dam completed in 1932 that closed off the Zuiderzee, converting an arm of the North Sea into the freshwater IJsselmeer and creating the land that became Flevoland. It is among the largest hydraulic engineering works ever undertaken, and it fundamentally altered the geography and safety of the Netherlands.

The Wadden Center at Kornwerderzand explains it, along with the Wadden Sea on the other side — a UNESCO-listed tidal system of mudflats and salt marsh, one of the most important bird migration sites in the world. Interactive exhibits cover water management, the ecology of both bodies of water, and the Fish Migration River, a project cutting a channel through the dam to let fish move between salt and fresh water again after ninety years.

A storm room and a 4D flight over the region carry the drama of what the dam holds back.
