Alabama's musical output is wildly disproportionate to its population, and the Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia exists to make that case. Hank Williams, Nat King Cole, Lionel Richie, the Temptations' Eddie Kendricks, Emmylou Harris, Sun Ra, W.C. Handy — the father of the blues, born in Florence across the river — and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, whose playing appears on records by Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett.

Muscle Shoals is the local story that matters most. Two small studios in an unremarkable northwest Alabama town produced a run of soul and rock records in the 1960s and 70s that changed popular music, largely through a group of white session musicians whose sound many listeners assumed was Black.

The museum displays memorabilia, instruments, stage costumes and interactive exhibits, including Alabama's tour bus.

The surrounding Shoals area holds the actual studios, several open to visitors, which makes a strong music pilgrimage.
