Albert Hall Museum

Established in 1887, the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur is the state’s oldest museum, housing a vast collection of artifacts, including paintings, jewelry, carpets, ivory, stone, metal sculptures, and works in crystal. Designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob in Indo-Saracenic style, the museum is located in Ram Niwas Garden. Notable exhibits include an Egyptian mummy and the Persian Garden Carpet, one of India’s finest art treasures. The museum also features murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Persian Razmnama, enhancing its cultural significance.

Albert Hall is Rajasthan's oldest museum and one of the finest Indo-Saracenic buildings in India — Samuel Swinton Jacob designed it in 1887, blending Mughal domes and arcades with Victorian structure, and it looks best floodlit at night, when the pale stone glows above Ram Niwas Garden. It was conceived as a museum of applied arts to give local craftsmen models to study, which explains the collection's character: carpets, metalwork, pottery, woodcarving, ivory, crystal, arms and miniature paintings, gathered as reference material rather than treasure.

Two objects stand out. The Persian Garden Carpet, woven around 1632 and among the finest in India, depicts a formal garden with watercourses and fish in extraordinary detail. And an Egyptian mummy, acquired in 1887, is displayed with its coffin — unexpected in Jaipur and a reliable draw.

The murals through the galleries, showing scenes from the Ramayana and from the Persian Razmnama, are part of the building's own decorative programme.
